Original Suminagashi · Hudson Valley, New York
Original works in sumi ink on paper, created individually in the Catskills using water drawn from the Esopus Creek. Each piece preserves a singular movement of ink and water.
No two designs are alike.
A single moment on water, set to paper.
Meet the artist.
Christine Fowle has been creating original hand-dipped suminagashi in the Hudson Valley for nearly ten years. Suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is a centuries-old Japanese art in which ink is floated on water and its patterns transferred to paper.
Working with water drawn from the Esopus Creek and traditional Japanese sumi ink, she uses a bamboo straw to guide the ink across the water’s surface, creating intricate designs that can never be repeated.
Her work is informed by her practice of Zen, bringing together careful attention, deliberate movement, and an openness to the unexpected.
